  • NHMRC-NIHR Collaborative Research Grant Scheme funding in 2020

    The National Health and Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research Collaborative Research (NIHR) Grant Scheme supports Australian participation and collaboration in leading international collaborative research through the United Kingdom’s NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme. This round will focus on priorities for funding in 2020.

     

    The HTA Programme funds independent research about the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests. Projects involving Australian researchers based in Australia which are chosen by the NIHR for funding maybe eligible for NHMRC support.

     

    NHMRC is supporting Australian researchers for the following NIHR HTA research topics:

    • Antipsychotics for anorexia nervosa
    • Combination treatment for dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia
    • Care planning intervention for people with dementia who do not have regular contact with an informal carer
    • Vagus nerve stimulation for highly treatment-resistant depression
    • Extended treatment in early intervention in psychosis services

     

    Successful applicants will have grant funding for five years and a total of $3 million is available.

  • Science on the Swan 2019 Conference wrap up

    Congratulations and thank you to everyone who presented, supported and attended the Science on the Swan 2019 Conference.

     

    Science on the Swan (SotS) 2019 has successfully concluded after three days of inspirational talks, shared learnings and useful networking around the theme of Neuroscience and the Senses – Healthy Ageing across the Life Course. This was the 5th SotS conference hosted by the West Australian Health Translation Network (WAHTN) and the first co-chaired by Ear Science Institute Australia, the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science and the Lions Eye Institute.

     

    Speakers covered a large range of topics including: Hearing loss; Meniere’s disease; Eye disease; MedTech – wearable and implantable; Phenotyping and personalised medicine; Stroke treatment and recovery; Dementia; Alzheimer’s disease; Bipolar disorder; and healthy ageing.

     

    The keynote speaker for SotS 2019 was the very popular BBC science presenter and creator of the 5:2 Diet, Dr Michael Mosley. Who was introduced by Nobel Laureate, Professor Barry Marshall. Dr Mosley spoke on How to keep your Brain Young – the secrets to successful ageing. The take home message, in a nutshell, was: eat well (i.e. the Nordic or Mediterranean diets), do regular strength and high intensity training and use your brain (use it, or lose it!)

     

    This years SotS built upon four previous successful years and we’d like to share with you the worthwhile reads from some of our conference presenters, and long term conference partner organisations.

  • 2019 Ana Africh Stem Cell Research Travel Award

    The UWA Centre for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (CCTRM) has announced applications are open for the 2019 Ana Africh Stem Cell Research Travel Award. The Scholarship is open to all UWA Postgraduate students and Early Career Researchers in the field of stem cell research.

     

    The Ana Africh Award is designed to encourage and assist Early Career Researchers and PhD students to attend and present at nationally and/or internationally renowned conferences in the field of stem cell research.

     

    The value of the Award is:

    • International travel – up to the value of $2500
    • National travel – up to the value of $1500

  • Platform Leader role opportunity at SAHMRI

    A full-time, 2 year contract opportunity as the Platform Leader (Capacity Development) at the SAHMRI Aboriginal Health Equity Theme is now open for applications.

     

    The position works closely with Professor Alex Brown, along with SAHMRIs staff, students and partner organisations. The Platforms Leader will drive two newly funded capacity development programs including the national Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA) Indigenous Research(er) Capacity Building Network Initiative and another Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funded Health Translation South Australia project.

     

    This is a great opportunity for a leader of the future in this space to gain valuable experience while also significantly contributing to a cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Researchers.

  • Type 2 Diabetes PhD Opportunity

    The Menzies School of Health Research is seeking a higher degree by research (PhD) candidate to evaluate models of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and youth with Type 2 diabetes.

     

    To be eligible you must:

    • Be enrolled in or satisfy the admission requirements for Doctor of Philosophy program at Charles Darwin University
    • Eligible to apply for an RTP scholarship
    • Available to commence (or enrol) in Semester 2, 2019

  • WA Cancer Plan – Research Consultation

    The WA Department of Health is now undertaking consultation to inform the research component of the WA Cancer Plan 2020 – 2025. All individuals and organisations are encouraged to provide their input by completing a written submission or online survey.

    The closing date for the research consultation is Friday 7 June, 2019.

    Your response will help to increase the understanding around the current state of Cancer Research in WA. By gaining an increased understanding of what is currently occurring, we can plan and action appropriate initiatives to improve Cancer Research for the future.

    Submissions will be published on the consultation website (external site).  If you do not wish to have your written submission published, please send a request directly to the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network

    In addition to the online cancer research survey and written submissions, there will be many upcoming opportunities made available to the public to provide input on the WA Cancer Plan 2020 – 2025.

  • Call for submissions for online consultation regarding the Health and Medical Research and Innovation Strategy

    The WA Department of Health is inviting all interested stakeholders and organisations to make a submission to an online consultation regarding the Health and Medical Research and Innovation Strategy, which will inform the activities of the State Government’s Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund.

    The FHRI Fund is a State Government commitment whereby the Western Australian Future Fund will be re-purposed to enable the annual investment earnings from the Fund’s $1.3 billion capital to be used to support health and medical research, innovation and commercialisation.

    The online consultation complements a face-to-face forum that occurred on Monday 13 May and both build on prior consultations, including the Deputy Premier’s Health and Medical Research Roundtable in December 2017 and work conducted by Deloitte Access Economics on behalf of the Department of Health in 2018. The contributions of stakeholders to these prior consultations are gratefully acknowledged.

    Stakeholders who attended the forum on 13 May are also invited to make a submission to the online consultation.

  • Research Translation Projects (RTP) Grant Opportunity now open

    The Research Translation Projects (RTP) program is now open for its 13th round.

     

    The RTP grant program seeks to support high quality research projects which have the potential to improve policy and/or practice in WA Health, and aim to investigate efficiencies which can be delivered while maintaining or improving patient outcomes. Projects may be awarded up to $270,000 and must be completed within 24 months.

     

    To be considered applications must include:

    • Addresses relevant contemporary challenges faced by WA health
    • A solid economic analysis of the predicted benefits
    • Demonstrate a commitment to the translation and implementation of research findings into health care policy and practice improvements in WA

     

    Applications which feature projects for subsequent grant applications to external programs, such as the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) are encouraged. Applications from persons in the clinical service delivery environment with suitable multi-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations are also encouraged to apply.

     

    The 2019 (Round 13) Guidelines for Applicants and the Application Form can be downloaded from the Research Development site.

  • $52 million funding investment by WA State Government in long term Health and Medical Research

    The McGowan government has announced the annual interest from the $1.3 billion WA Future Fund will be redirected to address the gap in current health and medical research investment.

     

    The additional $52 million will ramp up health research investment over a three-year period (from 2020-2021 and 2022-2023). Which will increase the total research investment to $126.6 million over the next four years.

     

    The funding boot is aimed at retaining our innovation and commercialisation opportunities stemming from local research discoveries and innovative practices. Allocations from the fund will be made through a robust governance structure.

  • Apply now for the 2020 NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships

    The NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships scheme funds successful applicants to attain a research based postgraduate degree (Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Research Masters Degree).

     

    The objective of the Postgraduate Scholarship scheme is to support outstanding graduates early in their careers so they can be trained to conduct health and medical research that is internationally competitive. The intended outcome of the Postgraduate Scholarship scheme is to build research capacity within Australia.
