  • Professor Andrew Whitehouse awarded the 3M Eureka Prize for 2017

    Professor Andrew Whitehouse,

    Professor Andrew Whitehouse, head of the Autism Research Team at the Telethon Kids Institute was recently awarded the 3M Eureka Prize for 2017, one of the most prestigious awards for young Medical Researchers in Australia and New Zealand.

    The Prize is given to a researcher who has shown brilliance in their discipline, become a strong Scientific leader, and used their research to impact the wider community,  their institution, peers or discipline.

    Professor Whitehouse leads a team of 20 researchers, investigating the causes of Autism in children, and developing methods to identify Autism in children under the age of one. Professor Whitehouse and his team are also discovering and testing new therapies for infants affected by the condition.

    He said he was honoured to receive the Prize, and is still working with his team to develop therapies for children affected, allowing “every child to reach their full potential”.

  • Scientific Knowledge Translation Training workshop

    Congratulations to those who completed the two-day Scientific Knowledge Translation Training workshop presented by Dr Tamika Heiden.

    Feedback from those in attendance has confirmed that this was a very practice-oriented course covering:

    • The utility of Knowledge Translation, for researchers, educators, clinician-scientists and others
    • Knowledge Translation strategies and their evidence base
    • Developing a Knowledge Translation plan (practical, hands-on approach using tools)
    • Plain language communication
    • Communicating with different audiences

  • Call for Applications: Registrar Research Fellowships

    The Department of Health is inviting applications for 2018 Registrar Research Fellowships.

    Applications close:  1:00pm Monday 16 October 2017.

    The program is designed to develop the research capability of the WA health system registrar workforce and provide support to senior WA health system clinician researchers, facilitating high-quality research that will lead to better healthcare outcomes.

    Registrar Research Fellowships are being made available for the 2018 registrar year at 0.5 FTE.  It is required that the recipient would undertake 0.5 FTE WA health system registrar duties during this same period.

    The Department of Health invites applications from Western Australian medical and health researchers for infrastructure support through the Medical and Health Research Infrastructure Fund (MHRIF).

    Applications close:  1.00pm Thursday 12 October 2017

    Applicants must have received a minimum of $500,000 in medical or health research grant income from nationally and internationally competitive, peer-reviewed funding sources during the previous three consecutive calendar years (2014-2016).

  • Professor Elizabeth Geelhoed appointed head of the WAHTN research enabling platform ‘Health Economics and Evaluation’.

    Professor Elizabeth Geelhoed is the Head of the WAHTN research enabling platform ‘Health Economics and Evaluation’.

    Professor Geelhoed brings substantial expertise to the WAHTN and will help develop expertise in health economics in WA, especially in relation to the conduct of clinical trials and as measurement of the impact of research.

    Prior to her appointment at the WAHTN, Professor Geelhoed has worked as a health economist in education, research and policy development at The University of Western Australia, within the School of Population Health.

    Her research focuses on health economics, economic evaluation and Burden of disease.

    Professor Geelhoed is also an executive member of the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australia (CAPHIA) – the national body representing Public Health education programs across Australia.
